Newcastle United Reserves went down 1-0 to Everton at the Halton Stadium in Widnes.
Everton included first-team regulars Leighton Baines (a target for Newcastle last year), Tony Hibbert and Victor Anichebe in their starting line-up.
Congolese youngster Kazenga LuaLua returned for the Magpies after injury.
Italy Under-19 striker Fabio Zamblera made his first start of the season.
Everton won the game with a goal from Lukas Jutkiewicz on 25 minutes with a close-range header from Tony Hibbert's cross.
