Pardew's Chance To Prove His Point!

Last updated : 27 October 2014 By Footy Mad - Editor

ALL Newcastle United fans WANT to be in Europe. We WANT to play the best the continent has to offer, and nobody loved the adventure more than me.

We want more "Tino nights" like the one against Barcelona

I even wrote a book about it ("Magpies In Europe").

Pardew told us how difficult life can be for a club that is in the Europa League, and the Premier League form will suffer.

He gets his chance to prove his point on Sunday, facing Spurs - who played in the Europa League on Thursday.

Pardew couldn't mix the two competitions, and it did almost get the club relegated two seasons ago and the manager almost lost his job.

Not much has changed then ... only this time Pardew cannot blame  the Europa League!

Last season United took full advantage of Spurs’ Europa League fatigue, although it was Tim Krul who made the difference.

Spurs out-played us in every department and peppered Krul's goal, but the Dutchman was inspired and saved us from humiliation.

Less than 48 hours after their narrow win over Sheriff at White Hart Lane in the group stages of the competition, Spurs went down 1-0 to Newcastle on the Sunday lunchtime.

Pardew milked the moment ... let's hope he proves his point on Sunday.

If he is smiling on Sunday night, it could be partly down to Asteras Tripolis giving them a tough workout in the Europa League.

Let's see.

WHITE HART LANE - TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR

How To Get There By Car And Where To Park

Leave the M25 at Junction 25 and take the A10 towards Enfield. Continue on the A10 through Enfield and at the roundabout with the Northern Circular (A406), turn left onto the A406 (Sterling Way). Turn right into Fore Road (the A1010) which becomes the High Road and you will come to the ground on your left.

On street parking is virtually non-existent around the stadium on matchdays as a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) is in operation which means that only local residents who have a parking permit and blue badge holders can park legally. The perimeter of the zone is up to a mile from the ground and this has led to some private car parks near to the stadium charging up to £15 for the privilege. If you do park around the area, make sure that you take notice of the advisory parking notices attached to lamp posts, as otherwise you may find that you car gets towed away.

By Train Or Tube

White Hart Lane Station is the nearest to the stadium, which is only a few minutes walk away. It is served by trains from Liverpool Street. Located at Liverpool Street is a handy Wetherspoons pub, plus a cornish pasties outlet opposite. Richard Crouch adds 'The best station to get to White Hart Lane from is Northumberland Park. Come out of the station and cross the road and you are in Park Lane. It is a ten minute stroll to the ground'.

The nearest London Underground station is Seven Sisters which is on the Victoria Line. The ground is about a twenty minute walk away, but there are plenty of buses running up Tottenham High Road to the ground. Chris Knibs informs me; 'Although there are plenty of buses, not many of them go past the ground. Those that do mostly have numbers that end in a 9, so take 149, 249, 279 or 349. You can also get a normal overground train from Seven Sisters to White Hart Lane station.

Where To Drink?

Due to a number of pubs going out of business in the area around the ground, the choice for away fans is now rather limited. Simon Hornby informs me; 'The best place for away fans to get a drink is the Harringey Irish club on the Pretoria Rd which is opposite White Hart Lane station. It has two large bars showing Sky Sports, offers reasonably priced food and you can also park there for £10'. Dean Palmer adds; 'When you get off the train at White Hart Lane, go straight out of the metal gates and walk straight down the road in front of you. After a couple of hundred yards there is a car park on the left hand side, and the social club is in there. There are always a few away fans in there, and kids are also allowed in there too'.

Tim Pick a visiting Wolverhampton Wanderers fan adds; 'We drank at the Elmhust on Lordship Lane, which is about a ten minute walk away from the ground. It is large mock tudor style looking pub with 4 or 5 Sky Sports screens. There were home fans and away fans in colours mixing with out any problems. Prices were okay too (for London)'.
Carsie a Spurs fan from Belfast recommends; 'The Three Compasses which is situated in Queen Street (behind Middlesex University), which is a five minute walk from White Hart Lane Station'.

It may be an idea to drink in Central London before the game and then take a train to White Hart Lane Station. There is a Wetherspoon outlet at Liverpool Street Station from where you get the train to White Hart Lane. If you decide to take the long walk from Seven Sisters tube station to the stadium, then there are a number of pubs along the way.

Steve Dobson adds; 'I also suggest that visiting fans with a thirst for real ale, consider catching the train from Liverpool Street and stop off at Hackney Downs to visit the Pembury Tavern. Good beer and quality food. From there it is only 10 minutes on the train to White Hart Lane. The pub is only a couple of hundred yards from Hackney Downs station on Amhurst Road'. The pub which is featured in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide has no less than 16 real ales on offer! The question is, will you still then make it to the match?

Inside the ground alcohol is served in the refreshment areas. This is in the form of plastic bottles of Carlsberg (500ml). But please note that alcohol is not served in the away section at half time.

What Is It Like For Away Supporters?

Away fans are housed in one corner of the ground in between the South & West Stands, where up to 2,900 supporters (if demand requires it) can be accommodated, in the lower and upper tiers. If you have a ticket for the upper tier then prepare yourself for quite a climb to reach the away area. You are though rewarded with a great view of the action from this section and the leg room is ample. The facilities in this modern stand are above average. On the downside there is little space between the away and home fans. As you would expect there is plenty of banter between the two, but the stewards tend to take a tougher line on the away support. On my last visit a number of fans were ejected from the ground, plus there were repeated warnings to away fans to remain seated.

One strange aspect of sitting in the upper tier is seeing the Police Control Box directly above you, where a number of uniformed faces can be seen peering down on the away supporters. Although I have not personally experienced any problems at White Hart Lane, it may be wise to exercise caution around the ground and you may consider keeping colours covered. Expect to be searched by stewards on entry to the away section.

Tim Krul made 14 saves against Tottenham, the most by any keeper since Opta started recording full data in 2006/07.

It will be remembered for the greatest goalkeeping display from a Newcastle goalkeeper ... probably EVER!

I remember 'Budgie' Burridge, Pav and Shay Given producing breath-taking displays in individual games but nothing that held a team at bay for 97 minutes.

It was special, but it hid the fact that had Newcastle been playing against Liverpool's "SAS" or Man Utd's Van Persie and Rooney, or even with Robbie Elliot in goal, this could have been a disaster to rival the 6-0 thrashing we suffered against the Scousers!

Alan Pardew said on Sunday he is hopeful Newcastle United can give their fans more to cheer about on their travels this season – and banish memories of last term’s awayday disappointments - but he should be thanking his lucky stars.

Tottenham’s tally of 14 shots on target without a goal was the most by any side since records began in 2006, and Christian Eriksen created EIGHT chances, more than any player in a single game this season.

Loic Remy's early strike sealed a hard-fought victory but it was the goalkeeper who will deservedly take the plaudits.

With all of the pre-game talk about Spurs stopper Hugo Lloris missing out after being knocked unconscious at Everton last weekend, it was the Magpies' own number one who produced heroics to earn his side a 1-0 win.

Remy's well-taken strike in the 13th minute - his seventh goal in his last seven Barclays Premier League appearances - put the visitors ahead before his Dutch team-mate took centre stage, blocking Spurs at every turn.

The 25-year-old was worked much harder than Brad Friedel in the Spurs goal, the American deputising after Spurs' medical team opted to give Lloris a few more days' rest after his collision with Everton forward Romelu Lukaku seven days earlier.

Time and again Krul was called into action, producing fantastic saves to deny Roberto Soldado, Paulinho and Gylfi Sigurdsson amongst others.

The first chance for the home side came from a ninth-minute corner which was headed over by Soldado when he should have done better.

The opening seemed to stir Newcastle into life as Remy had a sight of goal shortly afterwards, but Tottenham defender Vlad Chiriches was on hand to block the France forward's shot behind for a corner.

Friedel just about dealt with the resultant set-piece and then had to push Yohan Cabaye's effort behind as the visitors came into the match.

But Friedel could do nothing about Remy's strike moments later as Yoan Gouffran robbed Paulinho of possession and played a through-ball to the QPR loanee, who took the ball around the American goalkeeper and slotted home.

Spurs chased an instant response but no one could get on the end of an inviting Christian Eriksen cross and Paulinho blazed over as a quick equaliser eluded them.

Jan Vertonghen was the next to try his luck for Andre Villas-Boas' side but his low effort was easy for Krul to collect.

The Belgium international then arrowed a low free-kick just wide of Krul's left post.

Soldado forced Krul into a full-stretch save as his flicked header from Eriksen's free-kick sent the goalkeeper flying high to his right.

Eriksen stung the palms of Krul with a powerful long-range effort, with the early afternoon sunshine making the save less routine.

Shola Ameobi had the ball in the back of the net after 37 minutes but he had been flagged offside as Newcastle adjusted to a counter-attacking approach.

Spurs were inching closer and closer to an equaliser but were yet again thwarted by wonderful goalkeeping from Krul.

This time the Holland international flung himself across goal to tip Paulinho's curling shot away from goal.

Chiriches did not see out the half for Spurs after the defender was left with a bloody nose as he challenged for a high ball inside the Newcastle penalty area.

The second half followed on from where the first had ended, with Krul again denying everything thrown at him by Spurs, using his legs to keep out Eriksen's stab towards goal.

A deflected Sigurdsson free-kick again brought out the best out of Krul, who was sharp enough to block Younes Kaboul's follow-up with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa then clearing ahead of the onrushing Tottenham cavalry.

With the hosts on top it was Soldado who passed up the next opportunity as he fired wide after latching on to Kyle Walker's cross.

Newcastle showed they were still a threat at the other end as they broke forward through Moussa Sissoko, whose shot was pushed away by Friedel.

Jermain Defoe was introduced with 22 minutes remaining as Villas-Boas decided to play with two forwards, Sigurdsson making way.

Andros Townsend cut in and arrowed a shot towards goal which Krul could only push away this time, but he got enough on the ball to keep it out of the path of the fast-approaching Soldado.

Brazil midfielder Paulinho hit straight at Krul when well-placed inside the penalty area as time started to run out for the home side.

Even when Spurs did manage to beat Krul they found the woodwork blocking their path as Vertonghen's back-post header hit the crossbar, ensuring that a goalkeeper on the pitch rather than one playing no part took at least a share of the headlines.
