Liverpool's chances were limited as Newcastle put the visitors under pressure, but in first half stoppage time Vincent Weijl raced past right-back Phil Airey before unleashing a venomous low left-footed effort low beyond Harper into the corner of the net.
Newcastle's last chance was in stoppage time when sub Nile Ranger was bundled over on the left. Airey's cross found Carroll who rose high to head past Gulcasi the last touch of the game.
