Czech Republic international David Rozehnal looks set to snub Borussia Dortmund to join Newcastle.
The Bundesliga side were favourites to sign the Paris Saint Germain star but Big Sam is ready to out-bid them and he has the benefit of Rozehnal saying he wants to play in the Premiership.
Dortmund have tabled a bid of €3.5million (£2.3m) but Newcastle can offer more for the 26-year-old.
Hans-Joachim Watzke (Dortmund manager): "We were keen on him long before the English registered their interest, but Paris won't allow him to join us.
"Financially we have gone as far as possible and we won't be part of a bidding race.
"We won't and we can't afford to spend €5million (£3.3m) for a central defender."
