Owen has not recovered from his groin injury while Butt will miss out with the ankle problem which almost ruled him out of Saturday's derby defeat at Sunderland.
Midfielders Joey Barton and Jonas Gutierrez, who appeared as substitutes at the Stadium of Light, could start, but Mark Viduka (Achilles) and Alan Smith (foot) remain on the sidelines.
